Another week in green for the portfolio! The portfolio is in its fourth consecutive bullish week. For the week, the portfolio jumped +2.70%.

(Seeking Alpha) Stocks succumbed to a late bout of profit-taking to close slightly lower on Friday after posting new highs in the early going, including the Dow Jones average hitting 29,000 for the first time. Sentiment was dampened a bit by the December employment report, which showed non-farm payrolls rising by a softer than forecast 145,000 jobs. But Friday’s lackluster showing followed solid weekly gains for the three major averages in which the Dow $DIA $DJ30 gained +0.7%, the S&P500 $SPY $SPX500 added +0.9% and the Nasdaq $QQQ $NSDQ100 jumped +1.8%.

New Oriental Education Chairman Michael Minhong Yu founded the company’s first school in Beijing in 1993 to offer Test of English as a Foreign Language test preparation course to college students. Since then the China stock has blossomed to become the communist nation’s largest provider of private educational services. At last count, it had 1,233 learning institutions spread around the nation. Among them are 1,138 learning centers and 95 full-fledged schools. A key metric for New Oriental Education is student enrollment, where it scores highly. At the end of fiscal 2019, New Oriental Education had approximately 8.4 million student enrollments. That includes roughly 7.5 million student enrollments in its K-12 after-school tutoring courses. There are also 600,000 students enrolled in test preparation courses. This was up from approximately 6.3 million total enrollments in fiscal 2018. Since its founding, it claims more than 44.8 million student enrollments overall.

ICR Conference 2020 – Retail gets real interesting next week when one the biggest events of the year takes place January 13-15 in Orlando. Heading into the retail blockbuster. JPMorgan singles out Lululemon $LULU and Boot Barn $BOOT as two retailers to watch in particular around. Lululemon has raised its Q4 same-store sales guidance range at ICR in 4 of the past 5 years, while Boot Barn is seen pre-announcing strong same-store sales growth for the holiday quarter.
Instead of setting a yearly challenge for himself as he has done annually for the past ten years, Facebook $FB CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicted major evelopments over the next decade. “While I expect phones to still be our primary devices through most of this decade, at some point in the 2020s, we will get breakthrough augmented reality glasses that will redefine our relationship with technology,” he wrote in a post. Other important themes Zuckerberg is forecasting are a private social platform, decentralizing opportunities and new forms of digital governance.
